Most Needed vs Most Requested
Here at Archway Food Bank, we’re always thankful for the incredible support provided by our community—every donation truly makes a difference. If you follow us on Instagram or Facebook, you may have seen our Most Needed Items posts. These posts are a simple way to let people know which items are currently in short supply.
Did you notice a second list that appears every other month: our Most Requested Items? You might be wondering, what’s the difference—and why does it matter?
While the two lists may seem similar, they each serve a unique purpose in ensuring everyone has access to food while also supporting the well-being of those who are accessing service at the Food Bank.
To break it down, our Most Needed Items are essential, non-perishable, and shelf-stable foods—think of them as pantry staples you likely keep in your own kitchen. These items are incredibly versatile. For example, rice or pasta can be prepared in many ways, allowing food bank clients to add flavors that reflect their personal or cultural preferences.
Most Needed Items also consist of nutritious canned goods like vegetables, tuna, and beans, which are not only high in protein and vitamins, but are also easy to store and prepare. When these items are in stock, we’re better able to provide familiar ingredients for a well-rounded, grocery list. Their long shelf life also means they can be used over time, reducing waste and increasing flexibility for cooking ideas. The most needed items are also items that we purchase if we run out of donated food. Currently, we have to purchase these items regularly to ensure food availability for all.
Since we heavily rely on donations, sometimes we have lots of canned tuna but very little rice, which is why we like to inform the community about what we need!
With your help, we can provide staple pantry items that many people appreciate.
Meanwhile “most requested items” are non-essential, but highly preferred food and non-food items. For example, coffee is something that is commonly requested item that, although desired, is not necessarily essential (although coffee lovers might disagree). While these items aren’t considered essential, that doesn’t mean they’re unimportant – these items help contribute to the mental and physical wellbeing of our neighbours.
At Archway Food Bank, we provide more than just non-perishable items. Our offerings include fresh produce, milk, eggs, bread, and meat. We prioritize variety, giving clients the opportunity to choose foods based on their preferences. This ability to make choices brings comfort, familiarity, and dignity to those accessing our services.
A study conducted in Ottawa examined 11 food banks and found that food banks using a choice model significantly improved clients’ overall mental health and reduced food insecurity compared to traditional, non-choice models.
When we share our “most requested items,” we’re highlighting the things our clients frequently ask for but are often in short supply—items like tea, eggs, sugar, or even basic self-care products like shampoo and paper towels. Meeting these requests helps us enhance the overall experience and helps fight against food insecurity.
Next time you’re thinking of donating, we encourage you to check out our most needed and most requested items! Follow us on Facebook and Instagram for up-to-date lists. By giving intentionally, you’re not just stocking our shelves, you’re supporting the wellbeing of our community. Thank you for helping us make a meaningful difference, one item at a time.
