Volunteer Appreciation Week!

From Conflict to Community: Nataliia’s Volunteer Journey

Hunger is Our Priority Vote

Almost one quarter (23%) of people in this country are living with food insecurity.

In 2024, food banks reached a somber new milestone with more than 2 million monthly visits, nearly double the rate seen only five short years ago. Over the course of those five years, people in Canada have watched their rent and mortgage costs increase, the cost-of-living skyrocket, all while wages haven’t kept pace.

If only life could be so simple, and everyone had the ability to provide this experience for their children. So many are struggling to put food on the table that giving a new gift at Christmas has become more out of reach than ever. Thankfully, with the help of our community, there is an opportunity to fill in gaps for those who are struggling, especially over the holidays.

New Space Sought to Accommodate Increased Demand for Starfish Pack

An increased need for Starfish Packs for students in Abbotsford schools means that the Archway Community Services program can no longer meet the demand in its existing space.

Currently 730 students in 41 elementary, middle, and high schools receive a weekly pack full of food to eat over the weekend when they don’t have access to school meals. Now halfway through the school year 12,494 packs have already been delivered and the Starfish Pack Program expects to distribute more than 25,700 packs by the end of the school year.
