MISSION | HISTORY | FACTS
Learn more about the heart behind the people who work, give and volunteer with the Archway Food Bank of Abbotsford.
Our Mission is to Nurture families and cultivate community within our city by providing access to healthy, supplemental food at no cost and other supportive programs.
Our Core Values
- Inclusivity – We welcome everyone, showing consideration and respect for all experiences and ideas.
- Compassion – We empower others and defend and advocate for human dignity.
- Excellence – We never stop learning and improving. We pursue our vision with determination, ethics, and heart.
We work hard to address the root causes of food bank use and advocate for long-term social policy change. Until food banks are no longer needed, we must strive to ensure that everyone in Abbotsford has access to the nutritious, fresh, and culturally preferred food they need in an environment that supports dignity and a sense of belonging.
In the early 1970’s the Christmas Bureau was an annual program organized through Archway Community Services to ensure that everyone in our community would be able to join in the celebration of Christmas. During the recession of the 1980’s many families and individuals were finding it increasingly difficult to provide for the basic necessities, let alone for Christmas. Fortunately, our community responded to these peoples needs and also recognized the extreme need for assistance throughout the remainder of the year. Thus, the Abbotsford Food Bank was formally established in 1983/84.
In the early 1980’s the Food Bank was assisting approximately 900 people every month. Today we are helping over 3000 people each month with approximately 40% of those being children.
Food Access Demographics
Over 5,000 people access food each month.
As the cost of living continues to rise, more and more people are facing food insecurity in Abbotsford.
Approximately 2.2 million dollars’ worth of food is recovered and re-distributed every year.
Archway Food Bank operates on 95% donated dollars.
